Description:
Arbore Church is a church from Arbore village (Suceava County), painted on the exterior, dedicated to "The Beheading of St. John the Baptist", founded in 1503, by Luca Arbore Hatmanul, on the river Solca, in Bucovina. The painted church of the monastery entered the UNESCO World Heritage List .
One can arrive there on road from Suceava (20 km on National Road (DN in Romanian) 2, up to 455.1 km), then take it to the left on county road 209 E, up to Milisauti (7 km), and then, on county road 209 F (10 km).
Why is it marvellous?
Arbore Monastery was built of brick and stone extracted from the stone quarries in the area. With a rectangular shape on the exterior part (without tower), inside, the plan is trichon (apses are two arched niches carved out of thickness of the walls), the church has an unprecedented form never seen before that period. The very elegant silhouette of the construction is accentuated by the continuation of walls towards west to about 2.5 meters and their union at the top by the arch, thereby achieving a semi-opened space that firstly appeared in Moldavian architecture.
When you can visit Arbore Church?
The monastery can be visited any day of the week, between sunrise and sunset, dressed decently. You can visit the church for free.
