Galata Monastery

Category: Famous Churches & Monasteries

Description:

Galata Monastery in Iasi is a convent of sisters, built in the late sixteenth century by Prince Peter the Lame, in the west of the city. It is on the hill Miroslava and can be easily observed from different locations of Iasi.

The Church, surrounded by walls provided with battlements and having a high bell tower at the entrance, looks like a fortress, often serving as a place of defence and was sometimes residence for princes. It is an example of the Wallachian influence upon Moldavian architecture. Near the church, from the hill Galata a beautiful view over the city may be admired.

How to get there?

The monastery is located in the southwestern  part of the city of Iasi, Monastery Street no. 4, Galata hill is at an altitude of 100 meters. The North part is steep and is dominated by broad plain of Bahui River.

Interesting things:

Galata Monastery is an art monument that tells as much as a chronicle, about the spiritual life of the Moldavian lands, it is an expression of culture, a source of beauty, joy and profound aesthetic experiences that impresses with technical mastery and harmony of construction. Architectural elements are characteristic to Church Galata II, elements that were no longer met in Moldova until then: the replacement of the crypt wall and the nave by three arches supported by columns, the appearance of secondary tower over the narthex, the median part that divides the front belt into two equal parts, the lighting of the  apses with three windows.
