The Neamt Monastery

Category: Famous Churches & Monasteries

Description:

Neamt Monastery is an Orthodox monastery of monks and it is the largest and oldest monastic foundation in Moldova.

How can you get there?

The monastery is situated in the village Vânători-Neamt, Neamt Monastery village, Neamt County.

Why is it interesting?

Sumptuous, with delicate colour effects, it proves strictly the architectural maturation of Moldavian architectural style of Stefan cel Mare's period. The facades of Church are covered with decorations characteristic of that period: Gothic windows, friezes of glazed disks, coloured in green, yellow, brown.

In the crypt - the tomb chamber which first appears in this church - there is the tomb of Stephen II, son of Alexandru cel Bun (Alexander the Good) and the uncle of Stefan cel Mare.

The treasures of art hosted by the Neamt monastery are proof of intense artistic and cultural activities taking place over the centuries here. There, Gavril Uric has displayed his talent, the most prominent representative of Moldavian clip of the fifteenth century. His first known manuscript, dated from 1429 is preserved in the Bodleian Library in Oxford (United Kingdom). In the cells of the monastery, the chronicler Macarie wrote Petru Rares' chronic and Eftimie put down the chronicles of the Alexander Lapusneanu's reign
