Description:

The most important and most visited museums in Bucharest are:

It was founded in 1936 by Dimitrie Gusti and is one of the most interesting ethnographical parks in open air in the world. The museum is located in the Herastrau.

In just two months, teams of specialists and students, led by Professors D. Gusti and HH Stahl, purchased from the studied villages peasant buildings (houses, household annexes, churches, plant) and indoor objects (furniture, ceramics, fabrics, tools, etc..), all of these considered representative for their places of origin. Copies of the houses and households are exposed on ethnographic areas.

The official opening of the museum took place on May 10, 1936, in the presence of King Carol II and to the public, a week later.

Between 1936-1940, the Village Museum in Bucharest had 6.5 ha of land, on which 33 authentic complexes were located, transferred from the studied villages: economic annex houses, a church (from Maramures County), crucifix, installation technical, fountains and a swing.

Between 1940-1948, the museum was in the situation of no longer being able to continue the activity and to close its gates because in some households of the museum, refugee families from Bucovina and Basarabia who came to our territory as a result the incorporation of Basarabia and Bucovina and a part of the land Herta and Bucovina to the Soviet Union were hosted. This led to the destruction of a significant number of buildings.

The realization of a new strategy for the development of the patrimony, supported by the need to increase the exhibition space of the museum, led to expansion of areas intended to the presentation of the monuments to 6.9 ha and to the growth and diversification of the collections. The heritage of outdoor exhibition is enriched, reaching a total of 62 architectural complexes with 223 units (40 houses, 165 household annexes, 3 churches, 15 plant and craft workshops), summing up an inventory of 17,000 objects.

Among the monuments acquired from different parts of the country we may notice  farms and houses from Suceava, Vaslui, Valcea, Constanta, Alba, Hunedoara, Maramures, etc.

During the communist period museum it was wanted to move the Museum to another location, outside Bucharest. The communists wanted to build a new residential complex for the party members.

With the revolution of December 1989, the Village Museum regains individuality. Research campaigns and acquisitions in recent years have increased the heritage of outdoor exhibition and the collections. Currently, the permanent exhibition comprises 121 separate complex, a total of 338 monuments and mobile assets totalling 53,828 items.

Two dramatic events, that fire in September 1997, and one in February 2002, affecting a number of monuments and the related objects inventory, but in a relatively short time some monuments have been restored for the normal visits.

In the  founding document, signed by King Carol I and taken to the foundation of the building, was recorded that the museum was necessary "to honour ancestral art with a worthy shelter of its significance". The project management activities were entrusted to  the architect N. Ghica-Budesti.
