Putna Monastery is an Orthodox monastic dwelling, one of the most important cultural, religious and artistic in Romania. It was called "Jerusalem of the Romanian People" (M. Eminescu).
How can you get there?
Putna is situated on Putna valley, 22 km north-west of Radauti, 2H DN road, where you can find information about accommodation and travel. The town is located at 37 km, in north-west of Suceava, following the road E85 for 22 km and then taking to the left on DN2 H for other 15 km, on the plain between Suceava and Suceava river. In the town of Suceava one can arrive on European roads E85, E58, the Bucharest-Cernauti- Liov train or plane. Suceava also has an airport with flights to Bucharest and other places outside the country.
Why is it extraordinary?
Putna Monastery was an important artistic centre with workshops on embroidery, calligraphers and miniaturists. He had a columnist tradition: - Chronicle of Putna, Chronicle of Azarie. He was famous by carving wooden crosses.
Putna Monastery Museum hosts:
- Collection of embroidery (Protection of the tomb of Mary of Mangop -1477, the oldest portrait of Moldovan art embroidery having the natural size);
- Manuscripts: one can notice the quality of design and variety of colours;
- Four Gospels of Humor (1473) and two from 1488 - 1507;
- Manuscripts of silver;
- Censer decorated with the coat of arms of Moldova;
- Crosses, icons, chalices;
- Carved pieces of wood (coffin, 15th century)
