Key points if you are visiting
- Before you leave the UK or any other European country, obtain the new plastic European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) which replaces the old E111 and E128.
- Both children and adults will need one of these cards each.
- The EHIC entitles you to the same treatment as a resident of the country you are visiting.
- Take out appropriate health cover, as full costs of treatment are not normally reimbursed in Romania, and any cost required to repatriate you will not be covered.
Key points for residents in Romania
- The cost of treatment is rarely fully covered, and if you are covered by the Romanian System, you will normally only recoup around 50-75% of what you have paid out, depending on the treatment.
- Residents will need to choose and register with a primary doctor (Familly Doctor), and this will help ensure the maximum refunds are obtained.

Every Romanian town has at least one hospital and the important cities have a minimum of two or three hospitals. In the important Romanian towns, the patients have the option of going to a private clinic. As far as the dentists are concerned, their prices is low as compared to other European countries, that is why visitors coming to Romania prefer this treatment both because of the reduced price and because of the high quality standard.
