Botanical garden in Cluj Napoca

Category: Parks and Gardens

Description:

The Botanical Garden of Babes Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca was founded in 1920 by Professor Alexandru Boza. The classification of plants and phytogeography prevails in organizing its scientific concept, harmoniously combined with artistic refinement which offers an extremely charming and picturesque view.

The Garden occupies an area of 14 hectares of hilly land that is suitable to successfully cultivate highly diverse collections of plants, coming from every corner of the Earth, collections totalling about 10,000 taxons. The area is divided into several sectors: ornamental, phytogeographic, systematic, economic and medical, each with its specific features. The flora and vegetation of our country is well represented by the Plain of Transylvania, the Carpathian Mountains, the Banat and Oltenia Region, the maritime dunes, etc.

A suggestive planning is represented by the Romanian Garden, dominated by the statue of Ceres goddess and other artefacts discovered in archaeological researches in the Roman city of Napoca, populated with crop plants, vegetables and flowers growing in Roman gardens, which are still planted in the Romanian peasants'gardens nowadays.
