The oldest Romanian resort is located in the south-western Romania, at an altitude of 168 m, 8 km away from the border with Mehedinti County and only 25 km from the border with Serbia. It is a millennial settlement referred to as "Ad aquas Herculis sacras ad Mediam".
Natural Environment: mountainous climate with Mediterranean influences, mineral isothermal and hyperthermia (38-60 ° C), slightly radioactive, hypotonic, with different chemical compositions:
- Sulphur, chloride, calcium, sodium;
- Chloride, sodium, calcium;
- Oligomineral.
How do I get there?
Baile Herculane is situated on Cerna Valley in south-west of the country, 19 km away from Orsova and 41 km form Drobeta Turnu Severin. You may get there by train (Baile Herculane railway station on the Bucharest - Timisoara line, then by bus up to the resort), by road (DN 25 Drobeta Tumu-Severin - Timisoara, with a deviation on DN 670), by plane (Caransebes airport, then by train or by bus up to the resort).
Special and interesting things
This is the oldest resort in Romania and it is recognized, particularly by the existence of thermal baths. Since Roman times settlements were built around the thermal water springs for the recreation of Roman aristocracy. Impressed by the miraculous healing power and effectiveness of the hot springs the Romans with the local inhabitants developed the place transforming it into an oasis.
Possibilities of treatment: aero heliotherapy, thermal baths, the swimming pool, sulphur and salt thermal baths in tubs and indoor pools; internal cure with minerals, plant hydro thermo therapy (and sauna), electrotherapy, kinetic therapy, hydro kinetic therapy in pools; inhale therapy. The resort offers excursions to the ruins of Roman baths, Thieve's Cave, Steam Cave, White Cross, and others. People come here for the high negative air ionisation that helps the body agains infections and regulates the function of the endocrine glands.
The resort has over 4000 accommodation places divided in hotels, motels, hostels and camping sites within or outside the city.
