Portile de Fier 1 are situated between localities Varciorova and Gura Valley (Mehedinti County).
The Iron Gate I is one of the largest hydro construction in Europe and on the Danube. The accumulation lake with a volume of over 2200 million cubic meters of the dam extends to the confluence with the River Tisza. The lake includes mainly the Danube Gorge, the largest gorge in Europe, between localities Baziaş and Orsova. Iron Gate area is a potentially rich archaeologically, historically and from the tourist point of view. To protect its special natural habitat, the Danube gorge region was included in the Iron Gates Natural Park.
Danube Gorge Region is one of the most picturesque and attractive tourist areas, both by the region's natural beauties and historical monuments dating from the Roman period. Drobeta and the ruins of the Roman camp built by the Roman emperor Traian, the bridge over the Danube are just some of the attractions offered by the Museum of Iron Gate in the city of Drobeta Turnu-Severin.
For those who love water and especially the Danube we propose a boat ride. The starting point will be Orsova and objectives of the visit will be:
- Cazanele Mari (4 km) are formed from Ciucaru Great Hill (318 m), whose steep walls border the Romanian side, and Ştirbatul Great Hill (768 m), the territory of Serbia
- Cazanele Mici (5 km) consist of Dealul Ciucaru Mare (313 m) and Dealul Ştirbatul Mare
- Decebal's statue is 55 m high . It was carved from the rock model of Mount Rushmore and is the largest statue in Europe, has only six feet less than the Statue of Liberty, with eight more than that of Christ in Rio de Janeiro, but about 10 feet longer than the height of the legendary Colossus of Rhodes.
The Location of the sculpture is near the town of Orsova, on the cataracts of the Cazanele Mici (Golf Mraconia), on the left bank of the Danube.
