Wonders of Ciocanesti

Category: Customs and traditions

Description:

Located between Obcinile Mestecănişului and Suhard Massif, on the banks of Golden Bistrita, Ciocăneşti is a place endowed by God with many beauties. Who gets in these parts is attracted by legends and their splendor. Here the old craftsmen of weapons during princes Bogdan, Dragos and Stefan cel Mare lived. The legend says that the arrow that marked the place of the altar of the Putna Monastery was created by the locals (ciocanarii) and gilded with gold from Bistrita Aurie.

Ciocăneşti is already known for its painted houses with traditional elements, yet mandatory. Who fails to comply may be sanctioned for failing to comply with village planning certificate issued by local authorities. What earned the reputation of village-turned-museum and transformed it in tourist village are not only the landscape, people's diligence and patriarchal silence from every part of the village, but other things kept the tradition. The village is famous, according to the mayor, for three elements: national costume, painted eggs on which there are the same superb popular models and painted houses.

If painted eggs and folk costume of Ciocăneşti go back in time for hundreds of years, houses that attract tourists have become emblematic for the village, and are much more engaged with modernity than one would think. Tradition has only half a century and was born from the idea of housewife - Leontina Peasant. At 86, she still sees the domestic affairs.  She is widow for many years. Her house was converted into a museum and is filled with all kinds of hand sewing, shirts, gowns, towels, rugs, etc.

Although villagers were wondering for days and days of the ornaments of the woman's house, when they saw that tourists stop at the house of Leontina, they became courageous and began to seek advice on painting houses with national models. In some years the number of those who painted houses in traditional elements exceeded 500. Not only do the houses retain traditional motifs, but also schools and community centres.

Not only do the houses retain traditional reasons, but also schools and community centres. Even though some homes will be modern, Western-style, no one stop, but there were cases when they returned to the village tradition. And because a lot of people come to admire the homes, the locals decided to come up with the other traditions. For seven years two festivals are held here, one for the trout, in August, and another one with painted eggs. They were added and the run logs on Bistriţa Aurie, and also the trumpeters in the area. Villagers will present in the lime light another tradition, Hope Chest, but also pottery, which was spoken very little about while it goes back for more than hundreds of years.
