Herastrau Park

Description:

Herastrau Park is the biggest park of Bucharest, with an area of approx. 110 ha. Before 1930 the area was a marshy area that was drained during the period 1930-1935. On this occasion, it was raised the issued of amplifying the park to all vacant land around considering that the Arc de Triomphe was already there.

Location: It is situated in the north of the city, the site bounded by B-dul Prezan Constantin, B-dul Aviatorilor, Şos.Nordului, Str. Elena Văcărescu, Şos. Bucureşti-Ploieşti, Şos. Kiseleff.

The special attractions are:

• Expo flora area, organized on an area of 15 hectares, the place where every year floral decorations of high artistic craftsmanship are organized;
• Rose Island, whose composition has two axes, which opens a perspective to the Village Museum and another link with the rest of the fleet. From June 1^st to autumn the island is live colourful garlands of roses are winding harmoniously in contrast with the verticality of the pillars of support;
• Japanese Garden, landscaped in 1998 with the support of the Embassy of Japan in Romania and the World Exhibition Commemorative Foundation, Japan;

• Monuments and statues.

Projects for this park were run by architects  like Pinard and Rebhun, alleys being designed by the architect Octav Dobrescu. The architect Fr. Rebhun is recorded for the plant composition (trees, shrubs, flowers). It was considered appropriate that the park can be arranged in two areas: a quiet aside to rest and culture (the land of the old park) and an area for active recreation, sport and entertainment (beyond the lake). This second area was designed by architect Visan and Tech. Mateescu in order to achieve a harmonious unity between the natural and the designed, taking into account the architecture and other areas of the park.

As the first area facilities, the park Herăstrău old, there are two theatres - one for adult and one for children - two pavilions for exhibitions, libraries, bower for reading and chess, jetties, banks, and in the new park there are huts, sports facilities, restaurants, etc.
