On April 22, 1867 is set currency leu (plural - lei) as a bimetallic coin with 5 grams silver standard named bani.
The first paper currency in mortgage notes are issued under the law of June 12, 1877, with denominations of 5 lei, 10 lei, 20 lei, 50 lei and 100 lei and 500 lei, the Ministry of Finance.
On July 1, 2005, the Romanian “lei” has lost his last 4 zeros, by denomination (revaluation) at a rate of 1 leu new (bank symbol: RON) for 10,000 lei "old" (bank symbol: ROL).
From July 1, 2005 are the following banknotes and coins in circulation:
- coin: 1 ban, 5 bani, 10 bani, 50 bani
- banknotes: 1 leu, 5 lei, 10 lei, 50 lei and 100 lei and 200 lei (issued in 2006), 500 lei
- coin: 100 lei (1 ban), 500 lei (5 bani), 1000 lei (10 bani), 5000 lei (50 bani)
- banknotes: 10,000 lei (1 leu); 50,000 lei (5 lei), 100,000 lei (10 lei), 500,000 lei (50 lei); 1,000,000 lei (100 lei)
