Description:
It is a beautiful city which houses a history of thousands of years, a city where many nationalities live together in harmony. Due to its outstanding architecture, the dominant position and geographical ambiance, the city was known since the late nineteenth century "Pearl of Transylvania". Town and city was founded in the Middle Ages. Sighisoara was founded by German immigrants in the second half of the XII century. Sighisoara Citadel is considered today to be the most beautiful inhabited fortress in southeastern Europe.
How can you get there?
Sighisoara is situated approximately in the centre in southern Romania Mures County, linked to Europe by road E60.
Why is it so special and what can you see?
Clock Tower
The main point of interest is the symbol of the city and town. It was built to defend the main gate of the fortress. It received this name because the clock with figurines, unique in Romania, located on the fourth floor. The Tower presents five levels, along with a pyramidal roof balcony and has a height of 64 m.
Smiths' Tower
It was built in 1631 on a rectangular basis and appears massif. Its role was to defend the Monastery Church in case of emergency.
Ropers' Tower
This tower is one of the oldest edifices of the citadel, and only the residential tower of the city preserved until today. It was built on the on the walls of the ancient citadel and was destroyed in 1241. The present form was preserved since 1305 and is one of the few towers untouched by fire in 1676. From a strategic viewpoint, it was part of the old fort on the top of the hill.
Butchers' Tower
It is one of the oldest towers, dating from the fifteenth century. Tower had a important role in defending the west side of the city. In front of the tower after a bastion for the artillery fire was built.
Tailors' Tower
It was also built in the fifteenth century. The ground floor is crossed by two halls, which could be closed by the massive iron gates. In the year of the great fire, 1676, in the tower there were, besides significant amounts of grain, gunpowder, and projectiles. After the fire, the gunpowder exploded, and the top of the tower was destroyed. In 1935 the arch was restored to its original form and gang was reopened.
Shoemakers' Tower
It marks the northern end of the city wall. And it was damaged by fire in 1676, and was rebuilt in the current form in 1681. In the front there was a bastion which was demolished in 1648.
Vlad Dracul House
It is located in front of Venetian House and is considered to be a very old building, dating around the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. This building is supposed to appear between 1431-1435, ordered by Prince Vlad Dracula, son of Mircea the Old, Head of Romanian Country.
Venetian House
So - called because of double windows that imitate Venetian Gothic. Dates from XVI century and it is the residence of the mayor Stephanus Mann, whose tombstone can be seen in the Hill Church. The present form of construction is due to the restoration done in the last century.
Monastery Church
The church is monument of Gothic architecture. It is found close to the Clock Tower. Dominican monks that belonged to the Church mention it in documents since 1298.
Orthodox Cathedral
Orthodox Cathedral is located on the north shore of Tarnava Mare. The cathedral was built between 1934-1937. It was built by architect D. Petrescu's plans in neo-Romanian style. The bell tower is located on the west side of the building. The total length of the cathedral is 45 meters and the height of the bell tower is of 45 meters. The painting was executed by the painter Damian Anastasius.
City Hall
It is one of the most beautiful buildings of the city of architectural terms. Situated on the outer side of the city, glued to its walls, the building guards the town. The construction impresses by its size and beauty.
