Situated in the meeting place of some of the most important trade routes linking West and East, Timisoara, the city-the county seat of County, is an important historical, economic, financial, cultural and scientific centre.
Timisoara has earned the reputation of the city garden with the many parks, public gardens, squares and green spaces. Other important points are : three major theaters - Roman, German and Hungarian, Romanian Opera and Philharmonic, numerous other halls.
Timisoara population is approximately 350,000.
Metropolitan Cathedral
It is a symbol of the city buildings. It was built between 1936-1946 in Moldovian byzantine style. It has 11 towers and a height of 96 m. The harmony of the 7 electric bells, cast from a rare material brought from Sumatra and Borneo Islands, is the best in the all the country. The basement houses the art collection of the old cathedral church of the Arhiescopia of Timisoara.
She Wolf
A gift received by officials in Rome in 1926. It is the copy of bronze capitoline wolf of the V I.Hr., symbol of Rome and the latinity. It is found in Victoria Square in the middle of a carpet of flowers.
Opera - National Theater
The first record of the theatre in Timisoara was in 1753. Between 1761-1874 theatrical representations were held in the former building of the magistrate (Nikolaus Lenau school today). In 1846, Franz Liszt held 3 concerts there, and in 1847 Johann Strauss-son directed in the same place. In 1868, the band Pascaly (Mihai Eminescu, the greatest Romanian poet was a member of this band) offered to the public three performances.
"Sfanta Treime" Monument
It is found in the centre of the Union Square. It was made of sandstone in 1740 in memory of victims of the plague of pestilence from 1738 to 1739, by De Jean. The style is baroque pedestal and is enriched with statues of saints in the lower part, and bas-reliefs representing scenes during the plague epidemic.
Liberty Square
It was built between 1731-1734, according to the plans of Italian architect Pietro del Bronzo. It was modified several times in 1782, 1850 (rebuilt after bombing in 1849), 1935 (renovation). Facade style combines elements of Baroque and Renaissance ornamentation.
Synagogue of the Citadel
It was built between 1863 - 1865, in Moorish style, the architectural project by Ignatz Schumann. Cross-shaped plan of the church is Greek, is hemispherical dome, the exterior has few decorations with enamelled ceramics. They are currently renovating to turn into a Philharmonic concert hall.
Union Square
It was the largest square of the City. Here one can admire exhibitions of animals. The place near pharmacy next to Baroque Palace, in the paving slabs that form the market, you can discover the plan of the former fortress of Timisoara and you can see the two squares: Liberty Square, respectively, Union Square. This is a curiosity that there were two squares in Timisoara (the cities usually had only one square).
