Description:
On 24th of February love is in the air. It’s love in the Romanian sweet style in the cleanest and most intense way.
It's Dragobete Day, called “Navalnicul” or “Fiancé bird”, a strong and handsome son, which brings love in our houses and souls.
Legend tells Dragobete is a mythological character, like Eros of the ancient Greeks, or Cupid of the Romans, which celebrates in heaven at the beginning of each spring the wedding of all the animals.
In rural areas, in particular traditions, ancient Thracians rituals are still alive. Our Romanians still remember the old custom of girls and boys, who, on Dragobete Day, dressed in holiday clean clothes and start with good vibes toward the forest to pick snowdrops, lady, then they put all these flowers in icons and use them in various love charms. Towards noon, the girls start to rush towards the village and after them there was a boy running, a certain boy, the boy they loved. If he caught the girl, he would steal her a kiss in the sight of the world, kiss that symbolizes their vow of love to the whole year. Here goes the famous saying "Dragobete kisses the girls!"
Each one takes care not to stay alone this day, otherwise it was a bad sign, premonitory of loneliness throughout the year, until the next Dragobete Day.
Source of joy and prosperity, Dragobete is one of the most beautiful ancient traditions of the Romanian people.
