Painting eggs for Easter is a very old Romanian tradition, as a testimony to the continuity of traditions and beliefs related to Easter, but also a cultural element. Significance at the red egg is tied so the Resurrection of Jesus and the regeneration and revival of nature. The egg is a primary symbol, a symbol of vitality. Painting eggs is done according to tradition on Thursday and Saturday of Great Week.
The symbols are different, being used geometric and religious elements, plants, animals, varied depending on location and tradition. Following tradition, this custom was gradually raised to the level of art, different techniques to beautify the egg are used .
In popular conception, red egg of Easter would have miraculous powers, healing and removal of evil, being the bearer of health, vigor and prosperity. The custom is that on the morning of Easter Sunday, the face being washed with water from a glass which also contains a red egg, having the faith that it gives health and beauty.
Often, folk craftsmen succeed in transforming a banal egg into a real miniature artwork, with painstakingly and incredible talent.
